When reviewing a piece of art work

Areas to consider

Composition: Discuss how different components come together. What is happening in the foreground, middle ground, and background?  What is the focal point and how does it affect the overall image? Have any particular techniques been employed to create the composition, for example layering, elongating, exaggerating, use of perspective etc.

Subject matter: Are there any cultural references displayed within the image? What style has the artist adopted and what period in time does it fit into. Is there a message or a theme with in the work?

Understanding the materials and processes: What materials have been used and why? How have they been applied? What techniques have been used? How have certain colours been used and to what effect likewise how have contrasts been used?

Inspiration: Who has influenced the artist or the particular image? How has the artist been influenced by his/her surroundings? How has the artist influenced you?

Mood/ atmosphere: How has the artist created mood, atmosphere, texture, contrast? What is the mood? How does the image make you feel and why? How can you use this information to progress in your personal work?

You have 10 weeks to complete the following work:

·         3 Artist studies based on the Tate trip or on an Artist/s that particularly appeals to you

·         Think about the materials you choose.  Use materials which best represent the work you are looking at (for flat images avoid coloured pencil.)

·         Remember the time scale you have to work to. Make sure the quality of the work reflects this

·         Using your sheet “how to look at art” write about your artist and the work you have selected.

·         Carefully consider the composition/page lay out

In addition to this you need to make sure you have completed the following class work:

·         Study of expressive artists in black and white and colour

·         Three emotions

·         Perspective work

·         Tate title page

·         Tate introduction page

·         Chiarascuro  portrait

Yr 10 book art

Chiaroscuro

·         Darken a room by closing curtains and doors

·         Sit in front of a mirror

·         Use a torch or lamp to light your face from one side

·         Carefully copy the shapes the light and shadow make on your face

·         Shadow the background really dark

·         Your face should look as if it is emerging from the page.

Also please make sure all drawings are completed before you return to school.
